Art neither good nor bad; instead art is subjective.
I say art can be ugly. Wait, make that Uber Ugly. Oh come on you art lovers who visit the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York. You ‘ooo` and `awe’ over Andy Warhol’s
Campbell’s Soup Cans (1962).
He painted thirty-two varieties of S-O-U-P! Sold at auction for near twelve million dollars.
Seriously?!
Say it with me – the man painted soup cans!
Not like Warhol painted the
Mona Lisa (okay, she’s sort of ugly, but that’s another blog).
Soup catapulted Andy as THE quintessential American Modern Artist. Consumers ate a lot of Campbell`s soup that year (only guessing here). If only I paid more attention during art class.
Masterpieces defined as the greatest work in the career of an artist.
But who is to judge how much art is worth?
Modern art is often valued based to a certain extent on the whims of critics, gallery owners and the buying public. The got-to-have-it-paddle-auction-bidders raise the price of art each year.
Art is the new gold for investors.
You tell us if you think these masterpieces sold at auction were worth the price.
1. Pablo Picasso, Women of Algiers (Version O), May 2015 - $179M
Cubist painting set a world record as the most expensive artwork sold at a live auction. Sold at Christie’s in New York and won by an anonymous buyer. This was the last piece in a series of fifteen paintings created in 1954-1955 designated with the letters A to O.
Spanish painter’s masterpiece a multi-hued painting portrays a scantily attired woman amid smaller nudes.
Yes, sex sells.
2. Alberto Giacometti, L`Homme au doigt, May 2015 - $141.3
A 1947 six-foot tall bronze cast became most expensive sculpture ever sold at auction. Unbelievable! Sold at Christie’s in New York won by was hedge fund manager, Steven A. Cohen.
Swiss-born Giacometti’s life-size piece one of six casts. Titled translated as
The Man Pointing or
Pointing Man. The artists created a noble figure who points mankind to a brighter future beyond our limited horizons.
It’s still a STICK MAN!
3. Sir Francis Bacon, Three Studies of Lucian Freud, November 2013 - $142M
This three-panel painting was of Lucian Freud, a friend and rival of Bacon. Triptych sold at Christie`s in New York in November 2013; won by an anonymous bidder. Bidding war so intense, the auction lasted only six minutes!
The work, completed in 1969, considered one of the Irish-born artist`s greatest masterpieces. Francis’ style abstract, distorted and isolated. He had a small body of work, not many paintings to buy, which makes them rare.
Take a good look at the FACES on the portrait.
Does strange equal beauty?
In this case, strange equaled expensive paintings sold at auction.
4. Edvard Munch, The Scream, May 2012 - $120M
Now I know what inspired the mask from the movie
Scream.
Norwegian-born artist’s painting (1893) is one of four versions of a composition. You see a figure with an agonized expression; hence the popular title for this piece -
The Scream.
This impressionist’s painting is considered one of the most recognizable pieces of art in the world. I saw it for the first first time as an avatar on Facebook.
Okay, so I’m not that cultured.
Painting considered as the modern
Mona Lisa (let’s if I can use her name one more time in this blog) of our time. If that’s true, what bizarre works of art will we see in the future?
5. Pablo Picasso, Nude, Green Leaves and Bust, May 2010 - $106M
Painted in 1932, features Pablo’s mistress, Marie-Thérèse Walter.
I know what you’re thinking. She was one u-g-l-y woman, more so than the
Mona Lisa (snuck that one in).
Pablo engaged in this secret affair for many years. Let’s cut him some slack for the abstract. Artist counterpointed the real head with a sculpted head. He then folded his mistress` body with a plant.
Please don`t ask me to interpret the art.
Wonder what`s the cost of
insurance for a masterpiece? Right... if I need to ask, can`t afford it.
List does not comprise of the most expensive pieces of artwork ever sold. A painting such as
When Will You Marry by artist Paul Gauguin was sold privately to an unknown buyer for $300M.
I have listed the top five masterpieces sold at AUCTION.
And yes, beauty is still in the eye of the beholder.
But you have to admit, what you see here - FUGLY.
Just saying what you are thinking…
