Top 5 Most Expensive Fruit Sold At Auction

July 03, 2015
Who buys expensive luxury fruit at auctions?

Rich people, no, strike that.

W-E-A-L-T-H-Y peeps. Buy whatever they want at whatever price they want. Definitely a lifestyle to aspire or envy.

According to the United Nations between 30% and 50% food produced around the world never makes on to a plate. Over 1 billion tons of food tossed out a year – let that sink in for a minute.

Why does this happen?

The unnecessary strict sell-by dates; not sure when fruit expires by the way. Well, except for bananas, they turn black, no brainer. Buy-one-get-one free food items also contribute to waste. North Americans demand for fruit to look perfect, yes, it has to look orange-orange not pale orange.

Japan, however views fruit differently than Westerners.

According to The New York Times: “Japan is probably the only country in the world where you have fruit as a gift concept.”

You read that right.

Buy luxury fruit and then give it away. After all, it’s not a Monet.

1. Northern Territory Mangos - $30,000 (2012) Sydney, Australia

Tray of Mangos

Okay, this expensive tropical fruit did not come from Japan. Australia produces a lot of mangoes, about 7.2 million trays per year. First tray of twelve mangoes sold at 34th Sydney Markets Mango Auction raised a wallop for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

2. Two Yubari King Melons - $23,500 (2008) Tokyo, Japan

Two Yubari Melons sold at auction.

Yubari King Melons considered a status symbol in Japan like a fine wine. Fruit a product of the island of Hokkaido, north end of Japan near Russia. This hybrid, orange-fleshed melon prized for its sweetness and beautiful proportions. Yubari melons grown in greenhouses and given hats to prevent sunburn. I know, it sounds crazy. But if you could sell a melon for tens of thousands of dollars, you’d give it a hat too.

3. Ruby Roman Grapes - $6,400 (2011) Kanazawa, Japan

Small bunch of Ruby Roman Grapes in a box.

Fruit auction took place at a wholesale market. A local upscale pastry shop won twenty five grapes in a bunch. Do the math. Approximately $256 per grape! Ruby Roman grapes weigh 20 grams and contain over 18 percent sugar. Ping-pong to tennis ball size. Don’t ask me how to eat one.

4. Densuke Watermelon - $6,100 (2008)

Only 100 of these black-skinned beauties harvested per year, which added to its value. Considered the most expensive watermelon sold in the world. Inside, the watermelon crisp and hard. Sweetness beyond-beyond believable. Auctioned watermelon weighed seventeen pounds, cost approximately $359 per pound. Yikes!

5. "Taiyo no Tamago" Mango - $2,500 (2015) Miyazaki, Japan

Pair of Taiyo no Tamago Mangoes in a box.

"Taiyo no Tamago" or Egg of the Sun luxury fruit selected under strict criteria. Weight more than 350 grams and high sugar content. After the hammer fell at an auction in far-southern Miyazaki, the successful bidder airlifted the fruit to its luxury shop in Fukuoka.

Japan winner with the most expensive fruits ever sold at auction. Oh, and a shop in Tokyo sells a single limited edition banana for $6. How do you like them apples, or bananas.
