When a renter defaults on a self-storage unit, a notice is sent out to them with a statement of a claim of the amount owed to the storage company, including a brief and general description of the personal property subject to the lien.
The wording in most liens laws as follows:
Such description shall be reasonably adequate to permit the person notified to identify such property; except that any container including, but not limited to, a trunk, valise, or box that is locked, fastened, sealed, or tied in a manner which deters immediate access to its contents may be described as such without describing its contents.
If the lessee does not make payment in the allotted time after notice given; then the storage operator may proceed with the sale of the contents of the defaulted locker. Several states also
"require" a brief description of the items in a storage unit to be listed in the advertisement of the sale.
This is why you
may see general descriptions of contents in an online storage auction unit listing.
We have listed all the states to show you which states are
"specifically required" to advertise a general description of the goods in a storage auction unit; those states left empty are not required to by law.
