During their official visit to Canada in 1986, Prince Charles and Princess Diana signed a declaration designating Nanaimo as "The Harbour City."

A beautiful city on Vancouver Island known as the "Hub, Tub and Pub City." It’s centrally located on the island, hence it’s the hub of the action. The city is also known as the “Bathtub Racing Capital of the World” – that’s the tub part. And as for pub… many to choose from, including one that floats on the water!

Nanaomi is the sixth-largest city in British Columbia. Wealth of activities includes hiking, boating, kayaking, biking, world-class scuba diving, snorkeling, shopping and dining. A rejuvenated and remodeled downtown, glorious harbor front walkway, new museums and art galleries; you won’t want to leave.


1. Sunken Wrecks



Jacques Cousteau considered the cold, clear waters in Nanaimo, "The best temperate diving in the world, second only to the Red Sea." Destination is home to three marvelous wreck dives. The first ship sunk in 1997 to create an artificial diving reef was a 366-foot navy destroyer, The HMCS Saskatchewan. Four years later, the second vessel sunk, which would create the world’s largest artificial upright reef, was The Saskatchewan - a supply ship. Finally, the last boat sunk was a retired deep sea rescue tug, The RivTow Lion. These three famous and fascinating sunken wrecks attract dive enthusiast from all over the world.


2. The Dinghy Dock Pub and Restaurant

The only registered floating pub in all of Canada, which is only accessible by boat or a ten-minute ferry ride. Menu showcases seafood, classic pub fare and local beers. Restaurant moored off Protection Island allows visitors to walk the rock beaches or visit the parks. Breathtaking views of the coast featured from every seat in the house.

3. Great International World Championship Bathtub Race

Hundreds of spectators come to enjoy this four-day (Thursday-Sunday) marine festival, which includes music, street entertainment, the Sail Past on Wheels Parade, and an annual fireworks display. First race off the Nanaimo`s harbour took place on Canada’s 100th Birthday in 1967. Race distance is over thirty miles. It`s a boat race, but with a bath tub in the boat. You have to see it to believe it.

4. Snake Island

Unique uninhabited island home to about 200 seals, which are accustomed to tourist and will interact with them. You can swim or snorkel with the seals! Rocky island is a destination for wildlife tours.


5. Englishman River Falls Provincial Park

Picturesque destination which features two spectacular waterfalls cascading along the descending riverbed into a deep canyon. A three kilometer trail takes you through a lush forest of Douglas fir, cedar, hemlock and maple trees. Enjoy the large day-use picnic area and campground. You can hike, fish or even swim during the summer as a crystal clear pool forms at the base of the lower falls.

6. The Bastion

The three-story building constructed in 1853 designed to protect its coal mining interests in the area. Considered Nanaimo`s premier landmark because of its shape and visibility from both land and sea. Built entirely by hand without the use of power tools or cranes; it stands as the only original wooden bastion in all of North America. Acts as a heritage museum with three floors of exhibits, costumes, and photographs. A daily cannon firing ceremony held at noon from May to September.

7. Mount Benson Regional Park

Five main rugged trails for you to walk, jog, bike or hike on an eight kilometer round trip up the mountain and back down. Allow four to seven hours to reach the summit and return back down to street level.

8. Frank Crane Arena

A 3,000-seat multi-purpose sport complex used for hockey and lacrosse games. Also available for the general public to skate.

9. Petroglyph Provincial Park

An archaeological and cultural treasure. Considered the largest known concentration of prehistoric rock carvings in Canada. Over 900 ancient images of humans, solar symbols, geometric shapes, and animals were carved into a slab of crystalline limestone between 600 and 1100 years ago. This historical site is known as “The Teaching Rocks." An outdoor cathedral and spiritual pilgrimage site for the local Ojibwe inhabitants.

10. Old City Quarter

Buildings in the area date from the late 1800s to early 1900s. Visitors can stroll through art galleries, music shops, and quaint local stores. Dine at one of the local bistros. It`s old world charm with a modern twist.
